There is another reason for captioning, though…
Over 23 million Americans have some form of hearing loss—a staggering 9% of the population and growing. When you add that to the number of people who speak English as a second language and people learning to read, you have a large population that view and enjoy pre-recorded and live programming in various forms.
It has been estimated that there are between 22 million and 34 million deaf and hard of hearing individuals in the world. Who wants to leave out potential consumers? No one. The drive toward increasing accessibility, along with new FCC requirements and the Americans With Disabilities Act, make captioning an important element of every production.
